Oladipupo Abbas, the younger brother of the former chairman of Irewole Local Government Area, Mr. Aderemi Abbas, who was killed during the February 17 local government crisis, has been reportedly penciled down as the Vice Chairman of the council.

OSUN DEFENDER reports that the late Abass, who was elected chairman of Irewole Local Government in the October 15, 2022, council poll, was among the six casualties confirmed by the police following the widespread violence that erupted across the state.

The trouble started when APC members moved to enforce the judgment of the Court of Appeal, Akure Division, which overturned a Federal High Court ruling that had sacked them from office on November 25, 2022.

However, members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who had also mobilised in large numbers to the Irewole council secretariat, clashed with APC supporters, leading to multiple deaths and the destruction of property in several local government areas.

According to a source in the APC, the leaders of the party have agreed on the younger brother of the late LG chairman to occupy the Vice chairmanship position.

The source said the decision was to compensate the family for the death of their breadwinner and ensure the legacy of the late Abbas continues.

“Yes, it is true that our leaders at the local and state levels have agreed on Oladipupo Abbas to be the Vice Chairman of Irewole Local Government.

“That is the least the family deserved. The late Remi Abass died serving the people, and the party is making sure that his legacy lives on,” the source said.

When contacted, Mr Abbas said he was not in a position to address the rumour.

Abbas said if his name had been penciled down as rumoured, the party leadership would announce it at the due time.
