Osun LG Killings: Victims’ Families Demand Justice As Police Arrest Five
The families of the two people who lost their lives during the February 17, 2025, local government crisis between supporters of the All Progressives Congress and the People Democratic Party over the control of the council secretariats in Osun State have cried out for justice.
The victims, Segun Oloyede and Taiwo Oyebamiji, were allegedly killed by political hoodlums in Iragbiji, headquarters of Boripe Local Government, with the families still waiting for justice almost a year after.
The father of late Segun, Mr Isreal Oloyed,e while speaking with newsmen on Wednesday in Aagba, alleged that Taiwo and his son were killed by political hoodlums that day.
The bereaved father said Segun left a wife and a son, adding that he was shot several times by the alleged killer and died on his way to the hospital.
Narrating how the incident happened, Mr Oloyede said, “What happened that day was that we heard that the governor wanted to come for a political rally to campaign for the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the Local Government election in Iragbiji and my son – Segun Oloyede and his friends went there to welcome him.
“It was at the point of waiting for the governor that some hoodlums started shooting. The hoodlums shot my son. My son was not the only one shot. The people who were shot were 15 in number. However, two of them died on their way to the hospital.
“He was my only son and since he was killed, things have not been the same and it is almost a year now but we have yet to get justice. The matter was reported at the state police Command but they did not do anything about it.”
The victim’s father, however, claimed five people were arrested on Tuesday by police personnel from Zone XI, Osogbo, concerning the incident, urging the police to arrest the others and ensure justice is served.
Mr Oloyede also alleged that his son’s killer was threatening his daughter, calling on the state government and security agencies to save his family.
“Also, the person who killed my son has been threatening people including my daughter. We can’t even leave peacefully in the town again. Five people have been arrested in connection with the incident
“What I want is justice. My son should not die like that. The police should not release those who were arrested and ensure that Osogbo and others are also arrested and justice is served,” Mr Oloyede appealed.
Mrs Adijat Popoola, the aunt of the second victim, said Taiwo’s death has caused a lot of distress to the family, adding that the mother of the deceased has not been herself since the incident.
Mrs Popoola who said the late Taiwo, an indigene of Iragbiji was an easy-going person, called on the police to fish out the perpetrators and ensure that they are brought to book.
She said, “I was at Osogbo that day. When I heard that people would be going to the local government, I called him that morning and I told him to be very careful.
“Around 1:00 p.m, I got a call that they had killed Taiwo and I rushed home. Since the incident happened, Taiwo’s mother has not been the same and yet, those who perpetrated the heinous act have not been made to face justice.
“Taiwo’s death has caused a lot of pain for us and the only thing we are begging for is justice. We want everyone involved in the killing of Taiwo to be arrested and made to face justice. The government should also assist the families of the victims and ensure justice.”
When contacted, the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Ade Ogunyemi, confirmed the arrest of five persons in connection with the incident. He said, “Yes, we arrested five persons and they are in custody.”
