The Osun Online Media practitioners Association (OOMPA), has condemned in total terms, the rising cases of rape across the country, calling for justice over the menace.
In a press statement signed by OOMPA’s Publicity Secretary, Comrade Tunde Olorungbotemi, the association condemned the recent rising cases of rape and defilement of children and girls in Nigeria and call on the Nigerian Police and the Ministry of Justice of the cases from Jigawa, Ibadan and Edo states to serve as deterrent to others.
Quoting the Chairman of the association, Comrade Jare Tiamiyu while speaking during a general meeting held at NUJ Press Centre, Osogbo, Olorungbotemi described the dastardly act as illicit orchestrated by selfishness of a mind towards another which would eventually throw the victim into traumatic state of mind
According to the OOMPA’S Spokesman, the rising incidents of rape is spreading faster than the ravaging Coronavirus pandemic in the country, saying all hands must be on deck to bring an end to the menace.
He said there was the need for parents and guardians to protect their children from waywardness, protecting them against befallen evil of rapists, ensure that were being given home training and most especially the basic knowledge about sex and sex education.
He said: “During our general meeting, our amiable Chairman, Comrade Jare Tiamiyu who was perturbed by the rising cases of rape in the country expressed worries and urged government and security authorities to fasten their bets and ensure those arrested perpetrators did not go unpolished so as to serve as deterrent to others.
“Fighting against this disgusting menace that is spreading even faster than the ravaged Coronavirus pandemic in the country required collective responsibility.
Statistics indicted that at least two million Nigerian girls experience sexual abuse.
“I, therefore, call on our law enforcement agencies and the judiciary to be more responsive in their prosecutions, ruling and passing judgment on perpetrators of any human being found guilty of rape to save and secure the human right of our girl child in Nigeria.
“All hospital owners and government parastatals should provide an emergency section to serve as first aid response to the victims of rape to save their lives.”
