The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State have engaged in a war of words following the invasion of Egbedi community in Egbedore Local Government Area last Thursday, where gunmen shot five people.

The PDP accused the APC of trying to desecrate the traditional institution by involving it in political matters, while the APC blamed the Adeleke-led government for fostering lawlessness and violence in the state.

In a statement on Sunday, Osun PDP Chairman, Sunday Bisi, criticised the APC for its actions, stating, “The verdict of the Supreme Court in the Rivers councils contention has put to rest the Osun APC’s shenanigans.”

He further argued that the ruling had confirmed that any local government election not conducted in line with Sections 28 and 150 of the Electoral Act 2022 was illegal and should be voided.

Bisi also accused the APC of engaging in deceitful tactics, stating, “Yoruba culture and traditions were firmly against tricksters, which the APC represents.”

He went on to say the party was “trying to associate brazen theft with its effort to snatch power through the backdoor” and called for an end to its “reign of impunity.”

In response, the APC, through its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, condemned the attack, claiming it was carried out by political thugs allegedly led by Governor Adeleke’s aide, Oriade Kazeem.

Olabisi highlighted the plight of Oba Muideen Azeez, the Elegbedi of Egbedi, who appealed to the Federal Government for protection.

He reported that Chief Ajiroba Yisa Abayomi and Prince Abioye were among those attacked, while six others were hospitalised.

He questioned the state’s security situation, saying, “The pertinent question on the lips of every right-thinking member of society has been: how did Osun State slide into such an abyss of a culture of impunity, where the cheapest thing in the state under the inglorious administration of Governor Adeleke is extra-judicial killing?”

He further accused the PDP of being violent, stating, “The shameful incident in Egbedi community has laid credence to our ceaseless petitions, both orally and in writing, that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is a net of killers whose slightly over two years of administration in the state has shed the blood of many innocent souls in the pursuit of selfish and rabid collective and personal ambition.”

The attack in Egbedi was reportedly linked to a land dispute involving individuals from Oloba in Ede, a neighbouring town.
