The Osun State Police Command has dismissed reports of banditry invasion circulating on social media, describing them as “unfounded, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary panic, fear, and tension among law-abiding residents.”

The police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, in a statement on Tuesday, said “extensive security assessments and intelligence gathering conducted by the Command have not substantiated the claims being circulated” on various communication platforms.

The state commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan,, issued a strong warning to individuals and groups behind the posts to desist forthwith.

According to the command, the spread of unverified information “not only undermines public confidence but also constitutes a threat to public peace and security.” It added that “anyone found spreading false information, capable of causing public disorder or inciting fear, will be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the relevant provisions of the law.

The police advised members of the public to “verify security-related information through official channels before sharing same.”

The Command also reassured residents of safety, stating it “reassures residents of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property and urges citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and continue with their lawful activities without fear.”

Ojelabi disclosed that “Security agencies remain on alert and are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of all residents across the State as the Command has deployed covert and Violent Crime Response operatives to be on the lookout.”

He encouraged residents to support security efforts by reporting concerns promptly.

“The public is encouraged to report any suspicious movement or security concern to the nearest police station or other security agencies for prompt action,” the PPRO said.
