Osun Students Kick Over Arrest Of UNILESA Graduate
A Geography graduate of the University of Ilesa, Osun State, Temitope Adedoyin was on Tuesday allegedly arrested by police after protesting his prolonged exclusion from the NYSC mobilisation list, OSUN DEFENDER reports.
In a statement by the National Association of University Students, Osun State chapter, signed by its Chairman, Comrade Adeleke Samson, the delay was reportedly due to discrepancies in his JAMB registration number.
Adedoyin, who graduated over two years ago, was allegedly told by the university that he could neither be mobilised nor receive an exemption letter.
Frustrated, he reportedly returned to the school and picketed the Senate building to demand action.
The Vice Chancellor allegedly called the police, leading to his arrest and transfer to the State CID in Osogbo.
Meanwhile, OSUN DEFENDER reliably gathered that Adedoyin’s past activism as a student may have contributed to his current situation.
But NAUS leadership demanded that “the school management and Professor Asaolu should be investigated on the incident and ensure justice.
“Facilitate without further delay the mobilization of Comrade Matuwo for NYSC.
“Provide assurances that such incidents will not reoccur within the institution.”
But the University in a swift response, denied the report, describing it as inaccurate and misleading.
This was contained in a statement by the school’s Registrar, Funso Ojo.
“The University of Ilesa is yet to graduate its first set of students, as the pioneer cohort admitted in 2023 is currently in their third year of study.
“Available records indicate that the individual referenced in the report completed a programme formerly run by the defunct Osun State College of Education, Ilesa, in affiliation with the University of Ibadan, prior to the establishment of the University of Ilesa.
“Issues relating to his NYSC mobilization are understood to be connected to the regularization of his admission with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), a process that is not directly within the control of the University.
“Notwithstanding, the University, through its Student Affairs Division, has been engaging relevant stakeholders to provide necessary guidance and support toward an amicable resolution of the matter,” the statement read.
