Osun Workers, Their Dependents Constitute 5% Of Society’s Population – Aregbesola

By Toba Adedeji

Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said that government workers and their dependents in the State of Osun constitutes only 5 per cent of the entire population adding that governance should not be reduced to paying salaries.

Speaking during the Public Lecture and Award Presentation of 2017 Osun NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel Press Week, Aregbesola also lamented that the media did not weigh the achievements of government on the other 95 per cent of the society in the aspect of the infrastructures and welfare despite the economic quagmire the country is facing.

The Governor in his address said, “The percentage of the civil servants and their dependants is 5 per cent of the population of the State. So, if you also consider the 95 percent of the society, Aregbesola administration has succeeded amazingly.”

“This is the problem of media, the media is not able to put the larger picture to play, a society is not major by those in government; they constitute a reasonable proportion of it but they are just a tiny bit of it. The society is the totality of the people, civil servants and the large population.

“The roads constructed by the government will be enjoyed by all, civil servants inclusive. The drainages being constructed will equally save civil servants and many from troubles, the security system we are improving upon to ensure that lives and properties are protected will also be enjoy from it. Do not reduce governance to paying salaries.”

“No reasonable government will like to make life miserable for anybody. The essence of government is compassion not for a group but for all. Government primary goal is to be concern about the well-being of the people.”

Aregbesola commended the members of the Union for the job well done and for painstakingly reporting the activities of the State.
