Umoru Mohammed Sagiru, the South-South Coordinator of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), has reportedly been killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

Umoru Mohammed Sagiru, the South-South Coordinator of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), has reportedly been killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

It was gathered that Comrade Sagiru visited his building project site in Aviele, Edo State, on November 8, 2024, to settle accounts with the workers. After handling these matters, Sagiru took time to inspect the work done. During this process, he was ambushed by unidentified Fulani herdsmen, who attacked him and fatally stabbed him.

This devastating news was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday, November 9, 2024, by the NAPS National President, Comrade Ridwan Opeyemi Munirudeen.

The association urged students to remain calm, while reminding security agencies to approach the case with urgency and seriousness to avoid any potential escalation.

NAPS warned that if justice is delayed, the situation could spiral out of control, as agitated students may resort to drastic actions.

Expressing heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, NAPS pledged to stand by the family of the late Sagiru and pray for them during this difficult time.

The statement reads, “With shattered heart, we received the sad news of the demise of our Comrade and Coordinator of NAPS South-South Zone (Umoru Mohammed Sagiru) who was allegedly murdered by Fulani herdsmen.

“According to the reports we gathered from the NAPS National Vice President who is also a resident of the same zone with our late Comrade, it was reported that the late coordinator visited his building project site in Aviele, Edo state to settle the workers who worked for him same yesterday (08/11/2024), thereafter, he took sometime to examine the work done by the workers, in the same process some unknown Fulani herders attacked him and stabbed him to death.

“We are calling the attention of Nigeria Police Force, Edo State Command, to investigate this gruesome act and bring the perpetrators to book. As we demand justice for our comrade, failure to fish out the evil doers, will result to confrontation against the appropriate quarters.

“By this statement, we passionately appeal that all quarters be calm pending the next line of action, we shall continue to update the public as event unfolds.

“While we advise and task the security agencies to take this issue with all seriousness and desist from time wastage, we advise the students community to remain resolute but shun violence that may lead to further loss of lives and properties, we are fully taking over this case and justice must be served, failure for both Edo state Government and NPF to address this burning issue urgently may result in serious confrontation by the agitated student community.

“Lastly, our heartfelt condolences to the family of late Comrade Umoru Mohammed Sagiru, we mourn and grief with them in this trying time, and we pray that, Almighty Allah will give them the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable lost. May God console his wife and the child he left behind.

“Rest in Power Comrade Umoru Mohammed Sagiru (Hybrid). You will forever remain in our heart.”
