Outrage As Chinese Nationals Disrespect Naira, Spray Money At Nigerian Mining Site
  • PublishedApril 29, 2025

Public outrage has greeted a viral video showing Chinese nationals spraying naira notes at a mining site in Nigeria, with a Nigerian police officer looking on and even participating in the scramble for the nation’s legal tender.

The disturbing footage, which surfaced on social media, captured the moment a Chinese expatriate, in brazen disregard for the laws of the land, flung naira notes into the air while Nigerians, including a uniformed Mobile Police (MOPOL) officer, dove to the ground in a humiliating rush to gather the scattered currency.

The scene, which many have described as degrading and unbefitting of law enforcement personnel, has sparked outrage across the country.

In the same video, a Chinese woman was also seen distributing parcels—suspected to be sweets or items of minimal value—to children working at the mining site, fuelling growing concerns over child labour and the exploitation of vulnerable Nigerians.

Women were also observed working under strenuous conditions, raising fresh questions about the activities of foreign nationals in Nigeria’s mining sector and the silence of relevant regulatory bodies.

This is not the first time such conduct has been reported. OSUN DEFENDER had earlier reported another Chinese expatriate caught handing cash to MOPOL officers, a gesture the foreigner claimed was a food subsidy and not a bribe.

However, under the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, the spraying or abuse of the naira is a punishable offence.
