Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the State of Osun on Wednesday swore-in the Chairman and Members of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC).
The commission has Barrister Segun Oladitan as Chairman, Mrs Abosede Omibekun (East), Mr. Rufus Oyeniran (West), Alhaja Babalola Adubi (Central) and Mr Oladosu Gidigbi (East) as members. Others are Mr. Yinka Ajiboye (West) and Alhaji Wahaab Adewoyin (Central).
The Governor noted that the constitution and the inauguration of the OSIEC team was in line with the provisions of the 1999 constitution on the conduct of Local Government Elections and other related issues.
Speaking during the ceremony, Oyetola urged members of the electoral commission to discharge their duties in the overrall interest of the state.
The Governor pledged his commitment to give the needed backing to the commission’s activities for a hitch free exercise.
“As a government, we shall give the Electoral Commission all the necessary support that will enable it live up to its name as an independent and impartial umpire that will conduct elections that reflect the wishes & preferences of the people.”
“For our local governments to achieve their aims, elections that willl usher leaders into power must be conducted by people who are above board. To this end, we have appointed people of impeccable character & flawless antecedents in their private & public lives to serve in the Commission.”
The Governor said “I thank them for accepting to render this all-important service. I also urge them to work relentlessly to further improve the rating of Osun by conducting free, fair and credible elections that will be models in the nation.”
Top on the agenda of the newly inaugurated Osun Electoral Commission is the forthcoming Local Government Elections.
According to the constitution, the commission is to spend 4 years in office.
