Oyo 2027: Makinde Holds Fresh Consultations Amid Defection Rumours

Political moves ahead of the 2027 general election appear to be gathering momentum, with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde said to be engaged in a series of high-level consultations across northern Nigeria amid renewed speculation over his political future.

A source familiar with the development said the governor held two separate meetings in the past week with a former northern governor described as influential in the North-West.

The source also claimed that Makinde arrived in Abuja on Sunday, where he briefly waited at the airport for another former governor, now a serving senator from the South-South, who recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for a newly formed party.

According to the source, both men later travelled to Bauchi State before proceeding to the North-West for further talks with the former governor, who is also said to be a former senator and minister.

The consultations have fuelled fresh claims that Makinde could eventually contest the 2027 election on the platform of the former governor’s party.

There are also indications that some PDP candidates in Oyo State may follow the governor into the same party if reconciliation efforts between his camp and the faction aligned with Nyesom Wike fail before the end of the week.

The latest claims come amid persistent rumours over Makinde’s political direction, although he had earlier dismissed speculation about leaving the PDP. Reports in recent weeks have nonetheless linked him with wider opposition realignments ahead of 2027.
