Oyo APC Blames Makinde for PDP Crisis, Says Tinubu Not Responsible
The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu is behind the worsening crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting that Governor Seyi Makinde and a few leaders within the opposition party should be held responsible.
The party made this known on Wednesday in a statement issued in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olawale Sadare.
According to the APC, PDP’s collapse did not start today, adding that the party wasted 16 years at the federal level and has failed again as the leading opposition expected to provide direction for Nigeria’s democracy.
The party noted that the PDP, once dominant across the country, has now become a shadow of its old self as serving governors, lawmakers and members continue to dump it for the APC and other parties.
Part of the statement read: “As democrats, we are worried about the state of the PDP since it lost power in 2015. It became obvious that the only thing uniting PDP members was access to the national cake. Once the 2015 election was lost, the party fell apart and has not recovered till this moment.”
The APC argued that the party’s present troubles are a reflection of its past errors, recalling how some PDP leaders once boasted of ruling Nigeria for 50 years. “Shortly after, power and money disappeared, and internal crisis consumed them, especially around the 2023 general elections,” the statement added.
The Oyo APC accused PDP leaders of abandoning their responsibilities and allowing Governor Makinde to take over the party.
“Because he lacked the capacity and experience to lead a national party, Governor Makinde became the final nemesis of the PDP. Today, he is the only PDP governor in the entire South, with only a handful left in the North,” the party said.
The APC stressed that President Tinubu should not be blamed for the PDP’s internal collapse, reminding the public that Tinubu and others “sacrificed a lot to sustain opposition politics during the Obasanjo era.”
“It is clear that Governor Makinde cannot rescue the PDP from its present coma. If all his fellow governors are abandoning the party, Nigerians should ask what his mission really is. President Tinubu should be allowed to focus on governing the country,” the statement concluded.
