The Oyo State House of Assembly has summoned the state Commissioner of Police Mr Abiodun Odude, the Special Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on security Mr Yomi Bolarinwa and the council chairmen of Ibadan South East and Ibadan South West over the incessant robbery incidents in some parts of Ibadan, the state capital.
This was sequel to a motion of urgent public importance moved at the plenary on Thursday by Hon Akeem Ademola Ige (Ibadan South East 1) who drew the attention of his colleagues to various reported and unreported cases of armed robbery attacks, especially during the night in areas such as Odinjo, Idi Aro, Challenge, Eyin Grammar, Adeyemo, Orita Aperin, Odo Oba and Felele, among others.
The motion which was supported by other members of the house made the house to resolve and issue an invitation to the police commissioner, the governor’s aide as well as council chairmen in the affected areas to brief the house on the situation report and provide ways of curbing it as soon as possible.
The meeting which will be held behind the close door in line with its sensitivity will have other stakeholders in attendance according to the Accord Party lawmaker, Ademola Ige.
Ige explained that the invitation of these men became necessary in order to forestall future occurrences.
“This motion is calling for the prevention of prevention of incessant attacks of armed robbery and night robbery in Ibadan, it was also supported by other lawmakers who are not from Ibadan, there have been an armed robbery in Idi Aro, Odinjo, in Odinjo where a night guard was killed.
“Early this morning I received a call from Odinjo of armed robbery, not less than 10 houses were touched. In Felele, Eyin Grammar , Odo Oba, Orita Aperin, that of Orita Aperin, the chairman of the vigilante was killed.
“Our resolution was to invite the commissioner of police, Special Advisers on security including the chief security officers in these local government areas of Ibadan South East and South West.
“The meeting will not be open due to its sensitivity, it is a security matter.
“I want to make sure that we put an end tonight robbery in Ibadan”, he said.
The house also declared that the two un-cleared nominee chairmen for Irepo Local Government Area and Asabari Local Council Development Area, Mudasir Agbaje and Taiwo Adeleke, respectively, and the two men claiming the leadership of Lagelu West Local Council Development Area Mr Akeem Aransi and Abiodun Oladeji remained banned.
The house, however, urged the state to nominate three fresh nominees who should be female.
This according to the chairman of the investigative panel set up to look at the discrepancies in the recently appointed council chairmen, Hon. Muideen Olagunju Alatede (Oyo East and Oyo West) was to give the female the opportunity and act in accordance with the 1999 constitution as amended.
While submitting his report, Alatede urged the executive to be gender sensitive by appointing women for the three controversial councils.
He said fresh nomination should be done for Irepo, Asabari and Lagelu West, saying the governor has the power to nominate but the assembly has the power to clear them.
He said that the executive arm of government had run afoul of the constitution by swearing in the two un-cleared candidates.
“The two un-cleared candidates were sworn in; Abiodun Oladeji instead of Akeem Aransi was sworn in, he did not come for the screening, he was appointed overnight, this runs contrary to the constitution and the principle of separation of powers.
“We actually indicated that the steps taken were in contrary to the constitution, this is why we rejected the nominees.
“The executive should comply with the 1999 constitution as amended to be gender balanced.
“That fresh nomination should be made for Asabari LCDA, Irepo LGA and Lagelu West LCDA.
“The executive should make a fresh nomination, the three remain rejected”, he stressed.
