The Oyo State Police Command has recovered the remains of five National Park Service forest officers killed during an attack by gunmen in Oloka village, Orire Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, saying the remains were recovered during an on-the-spot assessment of the scene led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna.

According to Ayanlade, the police commissioner was accompanied by heads of sister security agencies and the Commandant of the National Forest Rangers during the visit.

“Immediately upon receiving information about the attack, the Commissioner of Police deployed all available operatives and operational assets to the area, thereby preventing further attacks by the assailants and averting a potential breakdown of law and order,” he said.

The police spokesperson revealed that tactical teams, including officers of the Mobile Police Force, intelligence operatives and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units, have been deployed to the area.

He added that the scene was forensically examined to gather evidence that would aid ongoing investigations.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the attackers, numbering about 12, emerged from adjoining bushes, opened sporadic gunfire on the Rangers’ Office, and fled the scene,” Ayanlade stated, noting that investigations had commenced and were already yielding promising leads.

The command reiterated its commitment to the protection of lives and property across the state and urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information to support ongoing investigations.
