Oyo Pupils, Teachers’ Mass Overshadows Children’s Day Celebration — CPNN
The Child Protection Network Nigeria, the Oyo state chapter, says rising insecurity and the continued captivity of abducted pupils and teachers have overshadowed this year’s National Children’s Day celebration.
In a Children’s Day message signed by its coordinator, Rosemary Odigbo, CPNN expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity affecting schools and communities, particularly lamenting the abductees still being held captive.
Armed bandits invaded the Oriire LGA on May 15. They attacked the Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, LA School Esinele, and Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, where an assistant headteacher and a commercial motorcyclist were killed.
“This painful situation casts a shadow over this year’s Children’s Day celebration,” Ms Odigbo said.
As Muslims across Nigeria and the world commemorate Eid-el-Kabir, the coordinator prayed for families who lost their loved ones in the attack to be comforted.
She also encouraged parents and relatives still expecting the return of their children and loved ones to remain hopeful and hold forth. She urged the government, security agencies and relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts to secure the safe and immediate release of the abducted children and teachers.
Ms Odigbo further encouraged Nigerian children to shun violence, embrace peace, and promote love and respect in their daily interactions.
