Parents Charged On Priotization Of Children’s Education

Parents have been enjoined to invest in the education of their children rather than spend lavishly on clothes and cosmetics.

The Principal Assistant Registrar, Fountain University, Osogbo, Kalani Oyeniyi Odelade, gave the advice over the weekend during the Career Mentorship Programme and Scholarship for WAEC/ NECO Examination, held at Ataoja Government High School, Osogbo.

The Scholarship award is organised by a Non Governmental Organization, Standard Bearers Islamic Organization, Osun state chapter. SBIO is a faith based organization with core emphasis on all round educational and Islamic development of Muslim youths.

Delivering a lecture during the scholarship presentation, Mr Odelade noted that many parents place premium on social life above the education of their children, describing such frivolous expenditure as a waste that cannot bring happiness to parents in the future.

Odelade charged parents on the need for them to take good care of their children so that when they are no longer strong, they would in turn take care of them.

Education according to him is the only legacy that a parent could give to their children, saying once they do that, they have a chance and choice of relaxing in their old age and benefit from what they have succeeded at doing when they were young.

He added that many parents today did not realize this as they spend on frivolities, things that would not remain when they are no longer that strong to take care of themselves.

Talking on the menace of examination malpractices among the students of both secondary and tertiary institutions, the Islamic Scholar said both parents and teachers have contributed immensely to the problems of examination malpractices that have ravaged the standard of education in Nigeria.

He said all hands must be on deck to ensure that the system is sanitized, urging the government on the need to introduce technology into the educational system which he said would help in curbing examination malpractices in the country.

“When we talk of examination malpractices, I can say it emphatically that everybody is involved. Let me start from parents, they want the best but they wouldn’t want to give the best and because of that singular fact , they are ready to buy anything to make sure that their children get what they want. This is unbecoming, it’s wrong. They should always remember that whatever they get indirectly cannot or will benefit you only a little.

“Secondly, the teachers, lecturers etc most of them are morally corrupt. Some are because of financial reasons, take money from students, extort students to give them mark, this is very wrong and it should not be done “.

Odelade who urged students to be studious and be good ambassadors of the country said it was very disheartening to see female students bragging to have used what they have to get what they want, saying some female students do entice their teachers/lecturers with their indecent dressing in a bid to get cheap mark, urging them to desist from such act.

Earlier, the state Coordinator , SBIO , Dr Kamil Tijani had said that the scholarship award which he said has started three years ago, is designed to help the less privileged in the society especially those of them who as a result of being indigent could not complete their education.

Tijani said: ” These are ways of helping the government, helping the society to bring about development in our society especially in the are of education. The idea emanated from the fact that we noted that most these students don’t have enough especially, their parents to cater for them.

He further said, ” We deemed it for to contribute our own quota in a little ways in order for them to have sound education. And this would help guiding from from becoming nuisance in the society.

He therefore, urged government on the need to assist them in their bid to help indigent students in the pursuit of their education .

Eight students including Master Akintade Abdulahi from Osogbo Government High School, Osogbo and Oladosun Shukra, Agbanran School of Science, Ede emerged the best students and were given N20,000 each for the payment of their WAEC

Speaking on behalf of other awadees, the duo of Akintade Abdulahi and Oladosu Shukra appreciated the organiser of the award, they also thanked their parents for giving them a solid foundation upon which to build the future, promising to be worthy children to their parents and good ambassador of the their schools wherever they go.

They urged their junior colleagues to dedicate themselves to their studies and avoid being distracted by social media.
