Parking Dispute: Police Wade-In As Drunken Amotekun Operative Allegedly Assaults Man In Osun

Osun Defender gathered that the incident, which happened a few minutes past noon, arose from a dispute over a parking space.

Akande, who works with a gadget company, told Osun Defender that trouble started when some Amotekun operatives (not in uniform) approached him to question why his company’s vehicle was parked in the area.

He said he was abruptly slapped and attacked by the allegedly drunken officer who dragged him while offering to explain the situation.

The gadget seller stated further that the swift intervention of Police operatives from Dugbe division prevented the situation from degenerating into a scubble.

Akande said, “I was assaulted by operatives of the Amotekun Corps, a community policing initiative. This unfortunate incident occurred just a little past noon and was a blatant display of unprofessionalism and abuse of power.

“The incident began over a parking dispute. A driver from my workplace had temporarily parked a vehicle to deliver goods in the area. When the Amotekun team, led by one Omoyele, arrived, they demanded to know why the vehicle was parked there.

“As I stood nearby, I calmly explained that the driver had only stepped ike clogposite 2024 colorway away briefly and even offered to call him. Before I could finish, a member of the team, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, shockingly slapped me without provocation. This unprofessional behavior escalated tensions and created a public scene.”

“However, I must commend the prompt and professional intervention of members of the Nigeria Police Force stationed in the area (Dugbe). Their timely arrival and impartial response de-escalated the situation and ensured my safety,” he said.

He also told Osun Defender that the Commissioner of Police in Osun, CP Muhammed Umar Abba had intervened in the matter, with a meeting between the parties scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday).

He called on the Osun State Government and all relevant authorities to conduct an independent investigation.

He said, “Those found guilty of assault or misconduct should face the full weight of the law to serve as a deterrent.

“They should reform the Amotekun Corps. Comprehensive training and oversight mechanisms must be implemented to prevent future occurrences of abuse.

“They should issue a public apology. The leadership of Amotekun must formally apologize for the physical and emotional harm caused to me.

“The abuse of power by any security agency is a threat to our collective rights as Nigerians.”

“I urge human rights organizations, civil society groups, and the general public to stand with me in demanding justice. Efforts to reach the Amotekun Corps for a reaction were unsuccessful as at the time of filing this report.
