Pastor Adeboye Under Fire For Claiming Prayers Stopped $1 From Reaching N10,000

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has again sparked controversy on social media following his recent comment during a church service.

Speaking at the Special Holy Ghost Congress in Abuja, Adeboye warned that, without him seeking for divine help, the exchange rate could have reached as high as N10,000 per dollar.

Adeboye explained that Nigeria’s financial struggles are tied to fuel imports, despite the country’s abundant oil resources. Billions of Naira have been invested in refineries that remain nonfunctional, leading to a dependence on imported petrol.

He noted that when the president moved to end the costly import subsidies, some who benefitted from the old system were unhappy and, in response, created further economic challenges.

“When you are going to quote me, please quote me accurately. We need help. And it is not human help, it is divine help. I will give you one or two reasons why. Because of you want restoration, you must first of all admit something is missing.

“Before our president came in, everybody knew that the reason we were having financial problems (we have been having it o, before he came in) is the fact that a lot of money was being spent to import petrol.

“Ah! How can we be importing petrol where we have this thing in abundance here? We spent billions of naira on our refineries, they didn’t work. So we can be able to keep on importing.

“That’s why when the president came in, the very first day he came, he said this money that they spend in importing petrol, he says he cancelled it. We were all rejoicing, thank God. But some people were angry, those who were making money from importing petrol. Then they decided okay, we will create a problem.

“Then all of a sudden, naira began to go down, fast. I cried to my people, let us pray. Thank God some people joined me in praying. Because the way naira was going then, if God had not intervened, by now, 1$ would be about N10,000. But God stepped in. Just to show you that we need prayers. And you know this has nothing to do with politics, I’m not a politician and I will never be one. That’s not my calling.”

However, his statement has not gone down well with many Nigerians, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where the pastor is currently trending. Critics accused him of being out of touch with the economic realities of the country.

@revi_ofthehills: Lol. They are the 4th arm of the government. Dey play

@I__E__O: If not for his members that’ll attack me, I’d have asked if that man smokes sometimes

@ChaseOlamide: Baba say Mr 😂cos this one no be pastor again o

@Graythedread: I remember how the govt blamed BDC operators, Aboki fx, Binance founders for the naira fall.

@IdorenyinEtuk5: Everything God does is good. If God was to intervene in our exchange rate crisis, I don’t believe he will leave us at just below N2000 to a dollar. A miracle would mean N0.5 to the dollar to ease the sufferings of his people.

When God wanted to end famine in the days of Elisha,

@PreStoreNGN: Who ordained this man and this cohorts !! 😭
