The Peoples Democratic Party has accused political rivals of masterminding the assassination attempt on its Anambra governorship candidate, Jude Ezenwafor, ahead of the 8 November election.

OSUN DEFENDER reported that Ezenwafor was attacked by unidentified gunmen in Abuja while returning from an engagement.

The party described the incident as a desperate move to eliminate him and disrupt the PDP’s growing chances in the state.

In a statement on Sunday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the attack was carried out by forces threatened by Ezenwafor’s rising popularity.

“After a critical analysis of the violent incident, the PDP believes that certain interests who, ostensibly being uncomfortable with the growing popularity of the PDP candidate ahead of the November election, are desperate to prevent him from participating in the coming poll,” he stated.

He alleged that following the failed attempt, a smear campaign was now being prepared against the candidate by anti-democratic elements in Anambra State.

“This attack on the PDP candidate is another sad commentary on the alarming level of insecurity in the country under the overtly insensitive, corrupt and abysmally rudderless All Progressives Congress administration,” the statement added.

Ologunagba assured that the PDP would not be deterred by the attack and vowed that the party would continue to mobilise support for Ezenwafor.

“In any event, our clear message to the assailants and their sponsors is that they have and will continue to fail in their evil machination as the PDP candidate is divinely destined. Our candidate enjoys the support of the people and will surely emerge victorious in the election,” he said.

The PDP called on the Inspector General of Police to arrest the perpetrators and their sponsors, and to tighten security around its candidate.

It also urged Ezenwafor not to be discouraged, declaring that Anambra remains a stronghold of the party.

“The PDP family urges Chief Ezenwafor not to be dispirited by the attack. The fact remains that Anambra State is home to the PDP and no amount of attack, smear campaign or propaganda will sway the resolve of our Party, candidate and the people of Anambra State to elect a transparent, humane, people-oriented and result-driven administration on the platform of the PDP,” the statement concluded.
