PDP BoT Says Party Crisis Self-Inflicted, Convention to Proceed

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the ongoing crisis in the party as self-inflicted, affirming that the national convention scheduled for Ibadan, Oyo State, will go ahead as planned.

BoT Chairman and former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, made the statement on Thursday in Abuja during the presentation of the BoT Reconciliation Committee’s report.

He insisted that the PDP remains a formidable force focused on repositioning itself for future elections.

“It is absolutely practicable for us to go to the convention. All organs of the party—the Governors’ Forum, the National Working Committee, and the BoT—have agreed that we will proceed,” Wabara said, adding that the party would respect any lawful court order affecting the convention.

He dismissed claims that the BoT’s intervention was too late, saying the party’s troubles were “self-inflicted” and driven by conflicting personal and political interests.

“Some people want the party dead now so they can resurrect it in 2031 for their own purposes,” Wabara added.

The Reconciliation Committee, chaired by Amb Hassan Adamu, held extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including the Governors’ Forum, the NWC, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and suspended national officers.

Secretary Mike Oghiadomhe said the committee’s recommendations provide a roadmap for a smooth and credible convention.

Despite divisions, including a faction led by Abdulrahman Mohammed and backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, the Damagum-led NWC is counting on support from the BoT, governors, and other party organs to ensure the convention succeeds.
