The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State has suffered another major setback as one of its notable chieftains, Barrister Niyi Aborisade, formally announced his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring the PDP a “sinking ship.”

Barrister Aborisade, who led a group of his supporters to the ADC today, cited the ADC as a platform where opportunities to practice democracy, fairness and equity are unitedly allowed as the primary reason for his decision.

Speaking with newsmen in Ibadan. Aborisade, a United Kingdom–based human rights lawyer and gubernatorial aspirant of the PDP, declared that his exit from the ruling party was inevitable, ascribing to what he described as “bad and labour-loss experiences” and a lack of genuine democratic practices within the PDP.

“We have worked, labour for PDP, spending our personal money for the party, but it appears the road is very long for them”, he said

He further criticised the PDP for internal divisions and weak leadership, saying, “The PDP is deeply fractured and lacks direction. No serious politician would remain on a sinking ship when there is a better alternative.”

According to him,” They have not been able to resolve their current internal conflicts, causing problems within the party. Therefore we have to move forward”

Aborisade contrasted the PDP’s internal conflicts with the ADC’s ability to unite its members, providing a platform for everybody to contest elections and allowing people to exercise their fundamental human rights.

“ADC will not dictate people to anybody. There would be free and fair election. Correct platform to do whatever you want to do” he said

He lamented that democracy is at risk in PDP and APC.

According to him, ” APC is the root problem of PDP but at the same time PDP allow things to go wrong between them in as much as they are unable to solve the problem, in as much as we tried to resolve the internal problems and in as much as the protagonists in the party refuse to listen to any voice of reason, so we are moving to ADC”
.

Aborisade, a lawyer and grassroots mobiliser, expressed confidence that his move would enable him and his supporters to contribute to the ADC administration’s development agenda and work with the interest of the party.

“We will make ADC more popular and with the caliber of who have joined the party, you will see ADC becoming formidable party in Oyo State and Nigeria” he added

Receiving Barrister Niyi Aborisade into the ADC, the Chairman of APC in Oyo State, Mr. Yinka Olona expressed joy and appreciated him for joining the party, assuring him of a prosperous collaboration within the ADC.
