Pereira Takes Over As Sporting Lisbon Coach

Sporting Lisbon has confirmed the appointment of Joao Pereira as their new head coach following the departure of Ruben Amorim, who has taken up the managerial role at Manchester United.

Pereira, 40, will step up from his position as the reserve-team boss to take charge of the Portuguese giants, as announced by the club on Monday.

The announcement comes on the heels of a dramatic 4-2 victory over Braga in Sporting’s final match under Amorim, a game that saw the team stage a remarkable comeback from two goals down.

The win preserved their perfect start to the new Primeira Liga season, with a 100% record intact. It was a fitting send-off for Amorim, who had led Sporting to great heights, including two league titles, the first in 19 years in 2021, and another last season.

Pereira, who had three spells at Sporting as a player and is widely respected for his leadership, will now take the reins at the helm. He is set to hold his first press conference as head coach later on Monday, where fans and media will get their first insights into his plans for the club.

Amorim’s departure follows the sacking of Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, where the Portuguese manager is expected to bring his success to Old Trafford after a golden era at Sporting.

Under Amorim’s guidance, Sporting also achieved remarkable results in Europe, including a stunning 4-1 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League, securing second place in their group.
