Peter Obi Condemns El-Rufai, Malami’s Detention as Political Persecution
Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the ongoing detention of former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai and ex-Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, calling it “worrisome.”
In a statement posted on X on Monday, the African Democratic Congress chieftain accused the Tinubu administration of using criminal prosecution as a political tool against opposition figures.
Obi urged the government to immediately end what he described as the persecution of political opponents under the guise of legal action.
“The current administration must put an end to the blatant persecution of political opponents disguised as criminal prosecution. The integrity of the rule of law in Nigeria is non-negotiable; its degradation undermines our economic development and threatens national stability,” he said.
He highlighted the timing of the arrests, noting that both El-Rufai and Malami had openly worked to ensure the current administration is voted out in 2027, raising questions about the true motivations behind their prosecution.
Obi also criticised the conditions of their detention, arguing that the denial of bail or imposition of overly stringent bail terms further indicated political persecution.
