Peter Obi Condemns Kwara Massacre, Calls for Urgent Action Against Insecurity
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the recent killings in Kwara State, describing the attacks as both tragic and a significant failure for Nigeria.
Obi, in a post on X on Thursday, expressed that he was “deeply saddened” by reports that gunmen killed around 150 people in communities including Woro and Nuku.
He extended condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the government and people of Kwara.
“Every loss of innocent life is tragic, and these killings represent a major failure for us as a nation,” Obi wrote.
The former Anambra State governor stressed that the recurring violence in the country highlighted the urgent need to tackle insecurity.
He warned that the situation in some areas of Nigeria had escalated beyond what is seen in certain war-torn nations.
“These recurring acts of violence across our country – now worse than what occurs in some countries at war – underscore the urgent need for us, as a nation, to declare war on insecurity of lives and property and to deploy every possible means to end this scourge,” he said.
Obi called on the relevant authorities to act swiftly to restore peace, bring the perpetrators to justice, and reassure Nigerians that their lives would be protected.
The attacks he referenced occurred in Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly killed dozens of residents and set homes ablaze.
Early reports suggested dozens of deaths, but the casualty figure later rose to over 100, igniting widespread outrage and criticism of the Federal Government’s handling of insecurity.
The massacre has drawn condemnation from political leaders, civil society groups, and residents, prompting calls for enhanced military operations and stronger security presence in the affected areas.
Security operatives were subsequently deployed to prevent further attacks, and government officials vowed to ensure that those responsible would face justice.
This incident is among the deadliest recorded in Kwara State in recent years and has renewed concerns over escalating violence in parts of Nigeria’s North-Central region.
