Peter Obi Engages Lawyer To Secure Release Of Viral Campaign Boy Detained In Kirikiri

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has waded into the matter of a young boy, Yusuf Alabi, who is currently being held at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos State, following reports of his prolonged detention without trial.

Yusuf, a teenager who became an online sensation during the 2023 general elections for courageously standing in front of Peter Obi’s campaign convoy, is said to have been arrested months ago on allegations of theft and public fighting—claims many have described as baseless and unjust.

Raising concerns via his verified X handle on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Obi expressed shock over the boy’s ordeal, especially the fact that Yusuf had been in detention for over three months before he was first brought to court in March.

“I was made aware of the predicament of a young boy named Quadri Yusuf Alabi… I have contacted a lawyer, Barrister Inibehe Effiong, who, luckily, has been actively working to intensify his release,” Obi stated.

He appealed to the police and relevant authorities to refrain from weaponising the justice system against innocent citizens, particularly the youth, whom he described as “vital contributors to the future of Nigeria.”
