Peter Obi Slams Tinubu for Retreating in France Amid Nigeria’s Security Crisis
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised concerns over Nigeria’s security situation, accusing President Bola Tinubu of neglecting the country’s urgent needs as he continues a “working visit” to France.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Obi pointed out that while Nigerians face increasing insecurity, with lives being lost daily, Tinubu remains in France, far from the crisis.
“Amid all these, the CEO (Mr Tinubu) of the troubling company called Nigeria is retreating far away land in France from the company’s headquarters,” Obi said.
He stressed the gravity of the situation, calling on Tinubu to return to Nigeria to tackle the growing crisis.
Obi, who served as governor of Anambra State, said that the president’s absence is particularly alarming given the scale of insecurity in Nigeria.
He described the situation as dire, with over 150 people losing their lives across the country in the two weeks since Tinubu left for France.
“I am compelled at this time in our lives as a nation to call on our retreating President’s attention to the security challenges at home, which entails that he immediately suspend his ongoing retreat in a foreign land and come home to address the overwhelming security situation across the country,” Obi urged.
He noted that the killings were not limited to one region. In Plateau and Zamfara states, Obi pointed out, “over 150 Nigerians have lost their lives to insecurity,” while the Niger Delta also faces repeated pipeline explosions.
“The repeated pipeline explosions in the Niger Delta, further reflect a nation in distress,” Obi remarked.
He added that in Borno leaders have expressed concerns over the resurgence of insurgency, with civilians and troops being killed indiscriminately.
“In the South-East, the situation remains equally grim, with ongoing killings and abductions,” he said.
