Police Arrest 3 Suspects Over Alleged Attack On APC Campaign DG, Oke In Ipetu-Ijesa

The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with an alleged assassination attempt on the campaign Director-General of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State for the August 15, 2026 gubernatorial election, Hon. Wole Oke during a political engagement in Ipetu-Ijesa community.

The suspects are: Olamilekan Oriyomi (24); Ayotunde Ikupolati Ojo (44); and Fakinleye Femi (31).

Addressing journalists on Thursday, spokesperson of the command, Abiodun Ojelabi, who paraded the suspects on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, mnips, said Olamilekan Oriyomi, a member of Eiye Confraternity, allegedly led a group of suspected political thugs to obstruct Oke’s convoy after a town hall meeting on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

According to the police, the incident occurred shortly after Oke and other party members paid homage to the Ajalaye of Ipetu-Jesa, Oba (Dr.) Agunbiade Oke, at his palace, before proceeding to the Town Hall to meet party members.

“Shortly after the meeting, a group of individuals suspected to be members of political thugs/Eiye Confraternity, allegedly led by one Olamilekan Oriyomi, obstructed the exit route of the visiting entourage,” Ojelabi stated.

The police said Oriyomi allegedly brought out an English Beretta pistol loaded with four live ammunition and was about to point it at the Oke before the Divisional Police Officer of Ipetu Ijesa, spotted and subdued him, adding that action caused panic at the venue.

“Officers deployed to the venue responded swiftly, arrested Olamilekan Oriyomi, and recovered the firearm and ammunition. Other suspects fled the scene”, the PPRO stated.

He added, that, “following intelligence-led operations by the Violent Crime Response Unit, VCRU, two more suspects, Ayotunde Ikupolati Ojo and Fakinleye Femi, were arrested on July 1, 2026, in Ipetu-Ijesa.”

CP Gotan said Oriyomi confessed to receiving the gun from one Busuyi Akinwole Ikupolati, alias ‘Omo-Akin’, who is currently at large.

He added that the suspect also made statements implicating some influential figures, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

“The Command remains unwavering in its commitment to rid Osun State of criminal elements and will sustain a peaceful, secure, and conducive environment before, during, and after the forthcoming elections,” the CP said.

He urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and provide credible information to security agencies.
