The Nigeria Police Force has arrested Dr. Fabian Ihekweme, a former commissioner and vocal critic of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma, at his Abuja residence.
Osun Defender learnt that the arrest occurred on Wednesday in the presence of his wife and children.
Dr. Ihekweme was allegedly taken from his home in Abuja and transported to Owerri, Imo State.
This development has drawn widespread attention, particularly due to the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, shared details of the incident in a tweet on Thursday.
He wrote, “Dr Fabian Ihekweme, a critic, was abducted by policemen yesterday in front of his wife and children in their Abuja home and taken to Owerri. His crime: criticizing Hope Uzodinma, Imo state governor.”
Adeyanju strongly condemned the action, describing it as an attack on free speech and a concerning suppression of dissent.
He also likened the alleged intolerance for criticism by Governor Uzodinma to that of Nigerian artist Burna Boy, saying, “Like Uzodinma, like Burna Boy.”
The police have yet to issue an official response to the arrest.
