Police Arrest Popular Singer Akon
Senegalese-American singer Akon has been arrested in Chamblee, Georgia, following an outstanding bench warrant, authorities confirmed.
The Chamblee Police Department said officers apprehended the Grammy-nominated artist, whose real name is Aliaune Badara Thiam, after an automated camera system known as “Flock” flagged a vehicle linked to the warrant.
Police traced the car to Tint World on Chamblee Dunwoody Road, where Akon was found standing beside it.
He “complied with instructions” and was taken into custody before being released from DeKalb County Jail a few hours later.
The arrest relates to a September 10 incident in nearby Roswell, when Akon was found stranded next to a Tesla Cybertruck on Holcomb Bridge Road.
Records indicate he was driving with a suspended license after failing to appear in court, leading officers to impound the vehicle.
He was subsequently arrested again two months later on a related warrant and transferred between DeKalb County Jail and Smyrna City Jail before his release.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Akon was booked on November 6 at 9:34am and released at 3:30pm, then rebooked around midnight on
November 7 and freed shortly after. His mugshot, showing him in a black hoodie with a neutral expression, quickly circulated online.
Authorities noted that Akon was cooperative and spent roughly six hours in custody.
Despite the arrest, Akon has continued his international tour, performing in New Delhi, India, on November 9.
His representative told People Magazine that the incident stemmed from a clerical error, explaining that the suspended license “should have never been escalated” and had already been paid, but was not properly recorded in the system.
The issue is expected to be resolved in court in early December.
