Heavily armed police officers on Monday barricaded the entrance to the Kuje Magistrate Court in Abuja, blocking journalists and lawyers from gaining access to the premises ahead of the court appearance of human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore.

According to SaharaReporters, the officers arrived early in the morning and sealed off all entry points without giving any explanation for the restriction.

Lawyers and journalists who attempted to enter the court were turned back, causing confusion and raising concerns over the motive behind the action.

A detachment of armed policemen, supported by Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), was sighted around the court as Sowore was expected to appear for proceedings to finalise his bail.

Earlier, police operatives reportedly fired teargas canisters within the court premises to disperse lawyers and Sowore’s supporters who had gathered in solidarity with the activist.

The action also affected journalists and other legal practitioners handling unrelated cases, leading to heated arguments and commotion.

Police Hilux vans were stationed at strategic points outside the court, heightening tension and fear in the area.

Some residents and passers-by were also allegedly harassed by the officers.

Efforts to reach the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, for comments were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls from journalists.

OSUN DEFENDER reported that Sowore was rearrested on Friday, October 24, 2025, by a team of armed policemen, reportedly ordered by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, while he was waiting to perfect his bail conditions granted by Magistrate Abubakar Sai’id.
