Police Begin Investigation As Osun Community Alleges Amotekun Corps Killed Three Residents
The Osun State Police Command said it has begun an investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of three people at Akinlalu village.
According to a statement by the Command spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, a chief from Akinlalu, Oyebamiji Kamiludeen had told the police that members of the Western Security Network (Amotekun) allegedly invaded the town and shot sporadically.
The community chief, according to the statement, alleged that three people – Ibrahim Oyebamiji, Sefiu Oyebamiji, and Abiola Olutayo were killed during the incident, with three others sustaining bullet injuries.
Ojelabi said police were mobilised to the town after receiving the report, adding that 13 expanded cartridges were recovered, and the injured were taken to the hospital for treatment.
The statement, however, said the Osun Amotekun Corps claimed that it was its operatives that was first ambushed by armed hoodlums while responding to a distress call from residents of Akinlalu.
Ojelabi said the Amotekun, in its statement, said it only called for reinforcement after two of its operatives’ service rifles were snatched.
The statement added that the Amotekun Corps said the reinforcement operatives dispatched to the scene came under heavy gunfire, resulting in a fierce exchange of fire lasting over an hour.
“According to their account, three suspected attackers lost their lives, arrests were made, and the stolen firearms were recovered from a hideout,” Ojelabi said.
The statement further noted, “Information received from Chief Oyebamiji Kamorudeen of Akinlalu that, members of Western security network also known as Amotekun came in large numbers and invaded Akinlalu community with their two official patrol and one private vehicles in retaliation for the two pump action guns earlier allegedly snatched from their operatives by yet to be identified person(s).
“During the invasion, they shot sporadically, which caused serious bullet injuries to the following people, namely: Adeagbo Kadijat ‘f’ 22yrs, Oke-Ila Oyebamiji ‘f’ 60yrs, and Fayomi Toheeb m 19yrs. It was further alleged that three persons lost their lives during the shooting, namely: Ibrahim Oyebamiji (m), 26 years, Sefiu Oyebamiji (m), and Abiola Olutayo (m) , and their corpses were taken away by Amotekun operatives.
“In a separate statement, the Amotekun Corps claimed that its operatives were first ambushed by armed hoodlums while responding to a distress call from Akinlalu residents. The Corps reported that during the ambush, two service rifles were snatched.
“Amotekun further stated that reinforcement operatives dispatched to the scene came under heavy gunfire at a barricaded junction into Akinlalu, resulting in a fierce exchange of fire lasting over an hour.”
Ojelabi said the Osun Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Osogbo, for a discreet and thorough investigation.
“All claims and counterclaims — including allegations of murder, assault occasioning harm, gun snatching, wounding, and impersonation — will be carefully verified to establish facts and ensure justice,” Ojelabi assured.
The command urges residents of Akinlalu and the general public to remain calm and law-abiding, adding that tactical teams have been reinforced in the area to maintain peace and prevent breakdown of law and order.
