Police Bust Illegal Mortuary in Cross River, Recover Eight Decomposed Bodies
The Cross River State Police Command has uncovered an illegal mortuary in Isong Inyang Community, Akamkpa Local Government Area, where eight decomposed bodies were found, while a mortician, Sunday Ben Reuben, was arrested in connection with the discovery.
The Command disclosed this in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, who said preliminary findings showed that the suspect was attached to a company operating within the area.
According to the statement, the discovery followed credible intelligence about the presence of corpses at a local embalming hall located in the community along the Calabar–Ikom Highway on February 13, 2026.
Police said operatives were swiftly mobilised to the scene after the information was received, and upon inspection, eight dried corpses were found inside the facility.
The suspect was identified as Sunday Ben Reuben, said to be a native of Nsit Ibom in Akwa Ibom State, and reportedly working as a mortician with Enghaut Company Mortuary.
Police authorities confirmed that the suspect remains in custody while a full investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the case and determine whether any laws were breached.
The Command appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid speculation, assuring that further verified updates would be made available as investigations progress.
