The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ataoja Estate Police station, Osogbo, Mr Clement Agbemoroti has tasked citizens to be very vigilant and be conscious of their environment.
He made the call at the monthly meeting of the Police Community Relation Committee (PCRC) held at the police station last Thursday.
The DPO reiterated the fact that no society, not even the developed ones, has zero-crime rate, hence citizens should do more to assist the police in providing adequate security for persons and property.
Besides consciousness, he asked them to provide reliable information and be ready to assist in prosecution when cases end up in court.
Ademoroti made reference to the failure of people who report cases to police to turn up when evidence is most needed.
He alluded to a robbery suspect, one Segun Oluwalogbon, aka Badoo who had been arrested after terrorising people in the area for a long time, saying Badoo’s victims were are unfortunately unwilling to provide information to prosecute him.
The police chief said, what the court needs is evidence and without such evidence, all the courts do is to strike out such cases, and when such happen, the public easily conclude that the police have taken bribe.
Members of the PCRC were equally warned to be aware of how they park their vehicles outside, especially with the rampant theft of car batteries.
They were also told to tear used recharge cards because armed robbers place them at robbery spots which results in the arrest of those who used them.
Members were therefore warned to report any incidence of theft of identify card or any belongings to the police, because of the repercussion if it is recovered.
