Police Impose “Harsh” Bail Conditions On Man Detained For Breaking Up With Ex-DIG’s Daughter

The Nigeria Police Force has reportedly imposed “harsh” bail conditions on one Mr David Nwokorie, who is currently in detention after a failed relationship with Ms Genevieve Opara, daughter of retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Mr. Hilary Opara.

Genevieve, who currently serves as a Deputy Manager at the National Pension Commission (PenCom), is married to one Mr. Seal Nwaka, an officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Despite her marital status, sources disclosed that she had been in a relationship with Mr. Nwokorie, which later turned sour.

It was gathered that Mr. Nwokorie was arrested last week by operatives of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) on allegations bordering on cyberstalking and blackmail, allegedly filed by Ms Opara.

However, human rights activist, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, who intervened in the matter, has condemned the stringent bail conditions meted out to the detained man.

According to Sowore, police authorities initially indicated that Nwokorie’s lawyer could facilitate his bail, but upon arrival, the legal team was faced with what he described as “ludicrous” requirements.

According to a document obtained by SaharaReporters, the police demanded two sureties who must either be Federal Government staff not below Grade Level 17 or Abuja-based businessmen with landed properties covered by a valid Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) valued at not less than ₦500 million.

In addition, they are to submit corporate registration documents, property ownership proofs, passports, and two recent passport photographs.

Efforts to understand the basis for such stringent conditions have been met with silence from the authorities. However, David’s family believes that the arrest and the harsh bail terms are a result of influence from Genevieve’s father, a former top police officer.

A family member who spoke to SaharaReporters on condition of anonymity said, “When we checked his profile, we saw he was once a Commissioner of Police and retired as an AIG. We believe he’s using his power to punish David unjustly.”

Mr. Nwokorie’s lawyer, Barrister Ezike Chibuzor, disclosed that the trouble began after his client discovered Genevieve had concealed her previous marriage and children. He said the breakup, which followed shortly after the revelation, did not sit well with Ms Opara.

Matters reportedly escalated when Mr. Nwokorie proposed to another woman. In what the lawyer described as an act of rage, Ms Opara allegedly stormed his residence and destroyed property. Though David initially forgave her, he eventually called off both the relationship and a joint NGO project they were running.

According to Barrister Chibuzor, David demanded ₦25 million in compensation for the damages caused, and later published a flyer with Genevieve’s photo, declaring her “wanted for damages”.

Following this, Ms Opara petitioned the police, citing cyberbullying, extortion and threats to life.

Contacted for comment, Ms Opara acknowledged the arrest but declined to speak in detail. “This matter is already in court,” she said, urging reporters to speak with her lawyer.

“David is currently detained for blackmail, cyberbullying, and making threats. The police have the full story.”

Her legal representative also confirmed the matter is now sub judice and refrained from offering further details.
