In its effort to rid the ancient city of criminal elements, men of the Nigeria Police Force, Division ‘A’ Moore Ile-Ife raided black spots within Ife metropolis last week.

During one of the raids, carried out in Oja Tuntun area as witnessed by OSUN DEFENDER at the ancient city, about eight suspects were apprehended in a ghetto behind the famous market.

According to a police source, the raid become imperative as cultism and violence had been on the increase in Ile-Ife and its environs.

The source added that some of the suspects who belong to “Eye and “Aye” Confraternity”   had been breaching public peace, conducting themselves in violent activities within the metropolis.

The source disclosed that some members of the cults have been charged to court, while police has intensified efforts to arrest others at large who are involved in breach of public peace in Igbodo, Edena, Oroto and other parts of the town.

The officer lamented the rate at which the youths, especially young school leavers who should have taken up vocational skill decided to engage in unproductive ventures such as cultism and other forms of criminal activities.

A social critic in Ile-Ife, Mr Biodun Kafidiya blamed youths involvement in criminal activities to high rate of unemployment which has made artisans to boycott their trades for commercial motorcycle business just to have their daily meal.

He spoke further that trade learning and skill acquisition now become unattractive as artisans could not be patronized because of the economic situation in the country.

He therefore called on government and cooperate individuals to help youths in the area through counseling, family integration, seminar and workshops which could redirect their focus from criminal activities to productive ventures.
