The Nigeria Police have emphasised on the need to establish dedicated Community Policing Team in all divisions working alongside Police posts to improve it service delivery .
The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris stated this while launching Community Policing Re-engagement Strategic Guidelines and the unveiling of Community Policing Logo in Abuja.
Mr. Idris said the Force shall develop a better interactive relationship that will lead to improve support and cooperation from various stakeholders.
He explained that communities are best policed when divided into manageable sections, hence divisional station areas should also be divided into sections with dedicated officers.
“Community Policing was initially introduced in Nigeria on the 24 of April 2004, when the then President Olusegun Obasanjo launched it in Enugu South East Nigeria. Community Policing is working in partnership with Community; the Community there by Participating in it’s own Policing; the two working together,” the Police boss stated.
Proactive Approach
Mr. Idris said that proactive approach to Policing will assist to reduce crime and anti-social behaviours in the communities.
“It is on this premise that the Nigeria Police Force has made the decision to review and develop more inclusive strategic guidelines taking into consideration from it’s pilot phase,” he noted.
Interactive Platforms
He added that the program will work with various community Police interactive platforms or initiatives such as the eminent persons forum which is an initiative currently being employed by the Police.
The security Adviser of the United Kingdom embassy Mrs. Katherine Leed said every nation adapt Community Policing to ensure success in the fight against crime.
She advised stakeholders in all Communities to partner with the Police and give necessary support in the fight against crime.
