The Lagos State Police Command has stopped an unapproved Egungun festival scheduled to hold in Oregun and arrested 12 suspects over handbills, posters, and social media publications warning residents against movement and other fundamental freedoms.

The Command, in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, said the suspects were linked to materials attributed to a group identified as “OJE PARAPO OF OREGUN.”

It warned that the publications attempted to infringe on the rights of Lagos residents.

According to the Police, the notices issued by the group sought to restrict freedom of movement, expression, and dignity, thereby threatening public peace.

The Command stressed that no group would be allowed to take the law into its own hands or impose restrictions on other Nigerians.

It added that it would continue to protect the fundamental rights of every resident in the state.

The Police further cautioned individuals or groups planning unauthorised gatherings to desist from any act capable of disrupting peace and safety.

It also referenced the planned Egungun festival billed for 27th and 28th November 2025 as contained in the circulated handbills.

The Command said it had assessed the level of fear already created among residents and decided that the festival would not be allowed to hold.

It noted that no event capable of heightening tension or destabilising the peace in Lagos would be permitted under any circumstances.

The statement added that the Police recently took similar action in Mafoluku, Oshodi, after publications aimed at instigating public disorder surfaced on 23rd November 2025.

It said 12 suspects were arrested in that incident and are currently under investigation, with prosecution to follow upon completion.
