Police Wade In As Video Of Schoolgirl Smoking Cannabis Goes Viral
The Nigeria Police Force has reacted to a disturbing video circulating widely on social media, showing a school-aged girl smoking what appears to be cannabis while being cheered on by a group of her peers.
The video, which sparked widespread outrage among Nigerian parents, teachers, and rights groups, led many to believe the incident occurred in a Nigerian secondary school, fuelling concerns over rising youth drug abuse and indiscipline.
However, the police have clarified that preliminary investigations suggest otherwise.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police disclosed that early findings indicate the footage is not of Nigerian origin.
“The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to a deeply concerning video currently circulating on WhatsApp and other social media platforms, depicting a school-aged girl smoking what appears to be cannabis, surrounded and cheered on by her classmates,” the statement read in part.
Adejobi explained that multiple indicators point to the video having originated from Zimbabwe.
“Individuals featured are heard speaking in both English and Shona, the latter being a language predominantly spoken in Zimbabwe and parts of southern Africa. Critically, no Nigerian languages or discernible Nigerian accents are present in the audio,” he stated.
“The original upload was accompanied by a caption written in Shona, with its initial posting on the Instagram channel @rusape_celebs_tv, a platform demonstrably based in the town of Rusape, Zimbabwe,” the statement added.
The police, while distancing the video from Nigerian jurisdiction, called on members of the public to desist from spreading unverified content.
“We urge the public to exercise caution when sharing unverified information, particularly when it involves sensitive content. Circulating such material can have unintended consequences for individuals, organisations, and communities,” Adejobi warned.
