Patients and their families have staged a protest at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, following a 17-day power outage that has severely disrupted essential healthcare services.
It was gathered that the ongoing power cut, caused by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), has left the hospital unable to carry out vital operations such as surgeries, diagnostic tests, and other critical medical procedures.
In a video sighted by Osun Defender, the protesters, who gathered at the hospital premises, expressed their frustration over the persistent blackout, which they say has led to unnecessary delays in patient care, including the results of medical tests.

According to some of the protesters, the lack of power has caused added stress to patients already in critical condition, while others have faced postponed surgeries and vital treatments.
“Stop killing people. People are dying here. The management here are thieves. We need light,” said one of the family members of a patient.
UCH management has reportedly confirmed the situation, stating that the hospital falls under the “Band A” electricity tariff structure, which mandates a monthly payment of N80 million.
