At least 400 prisoners are currently on the loose in Libya after they broke out of a prison in Tripoli, the Libyan capital, after a riot on Sunday.
The prisoners broke out of the Ain Zara prison in southern Tripoli, and guards were helpless to contain the situation. According to reports many of the prisoners are said to be supporters of Muammar Qadhafi, who were found culpable in killings that occurred during the 2011 uprising.
A statement by the Police read: “The detainees were able to force open the doors and leave”, just as it noted that guards were unable to prevent their escape as they feared for their own lives.
Tripoli has been the hotbed of heavy fighting as armed groups battle for control since the passing of Qadhafi.
