Pro-Kano Gov Protesters Storm Ibadan, Decry ‘Errors’ In Appeal Court Verdict

Some supporters of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Sunday, converged at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Ibadan, Oyo State to stage a peaceful protest calling  maintenance of the status quo in Kano State.

Osun Defender recalls that the Court of Appeal had affirmed the judgment of the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, which overturned Yusuf’s victory and declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Nasiru Gawuna, as the winner of the election.

Following reported discrepancies in the certified true copy of the Court of Appeal judgment sacking Yusuf, protesters from both camps stormed the streets of Kano, calling for the maintenance of status-quo for their respective candidates.

However, some supporters of Governor Yusuf took to the streets of Ibadan with placards, with inscriptions such as, ‘Justice for Kano,’ ‘Kano Abba Muka Zaba,’ ‘Abba is our Choice,’ and ‘Kano voted for Abba.’

They warned the judiciary against any act capable of igniting a crisis in Kano and other parts of the country.

Speaking with newsmen in Ibadan, the Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor on Wildlife Preservation, Ahmad Sawaba, called on the Supreme Court to take a careful look at the judgments of the courts and do justice.

He said, “The people of Kano State voted for Yusuf, not any other candidate and as a result, the judiciary should respect the wishes of the electorate. The discrepancy between the Justices’ pronouncement in the court and the Certified True Copy is enough evidence that something is amiss.

“The governor has been duly elected by the peace-loving people of Kano State as a result the judiciary should respect their votes. We don’t want Kano State and any other parts of the country to be turned into theatre of war. We are peace-loving people.

“The Supreme Court judges are highly respected. Our hope is that they will justify the confidence reposed in them.”
