Protesters in the city of Lagos and Abuja on Thurday reverted to the old national anthem as they clamour for a return to a more prosperous and just Nigeria, end to corruption, poverty, and inequality in the country.
The Lagos protesters were seen singing “End bad governance,” while demonstrators in Abuja chanted “Revolution” songs.
This was as major cities across the country were bombarded today as Nigerians hit the streets on the highly anticipated nationwide hunger protest.
Demonstrators are seen carrying placards and chanting slogans, with photos and videos flooding social media.
In a video shared by news platform Oxygist, a protester identified as Emmanuel explained his reasons for participating in the protest.
“Today is a hunger day. Hunger has brought me out. Insecurity has brought me out. I don’t have money to buy fuel. If our demands are not met, we will remain in the streets. We cannot keep quiet,” he said.
Another unidentified protester pleaded with the President Bola Tinunu “Mr President, the hardship is too much. We are suffering in this country. You tell us every time to endure. For how long?”
Placards reading “Say no to hardship,” “End Bad Governance,” and others are visible in the videos.
The protests, triggered by the prevailing economic hardship, are expected to continue until August 10, 2024.
