Supporters of the Labour Party (LP) in Imo State have demanded the replacement of the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).

The supporters, who are protesters, carried banners and placards, chanting songs at the entrance of the state office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the peaceful protesters, the party has the right to demand a credible, free and fair election in the state ahead of the November 11 governorship polls in the state.

The protesters said their demand for the replacement of the state REC was premised on allegations of compromise levelled against him.

The state Labour Party Chairman, Callistus Ihejiagwa, told pressmen that the party wants INEC to ensure that their votes count by using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machine.

In his response, INEC’s Head of the Voter Education and Publicity Department, Emmanuel Opara, gave his assurance that the commission would resist any attempt to compromise to ensure a free, fair and credible election.
