Qatar Bans Solo Travel For Nigerian Men
Nigerian men travelling alone can no longer obtain tourist or transit visas to Qatar, following new regulations introduced by the country’s Ministry of Interior.
The rules, aimed at reducing overstays, took effect on September 5, 2025, and apply to both new and pending visa applications.
Only women or families are now eligible to apply, while men travelling independently are excluded unless accompanied by family.
Applicants must also secure accommodation in five-star hotels and book confirmed return tickets before visas are processed.
The policy has raised concerns about its impact on business, family ties, and broader relations between Nigeria and Qatar.
For Nigerian men using Doha as a transit hub to Asia or Europe, the restrictions pose significant challenges.
Qatar says the measures are intended to curb overstays, but critics warn that the restrictions could strain bilateral relations and limit people-to-people exchanges.
Male travellers now face higher costs and may need to cancel or restructure travel plans.
Visa restrictions have previously caused tension between the two nations. In 2019, then Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki appealed to Qatar to ease entry barriers for Nigerians, and in 2023, former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika urged for a fairer visa system. However, the latest rules are stricter, particularly for Nigerian men.
