Qatar Summons Iranian Envoy Over Missile Strike On U.S. Base
Qatar has summoned Iran’s ambassador in Doha to protest Monday’s missile attack on the U.S. al-Udeid military base located in the Gulf country.
The Qatari Foreign Ministry on Tuesday described the strike as a breach of the principles of good neighbourliness and a threat to regional stability.
The Iranian assault followed U.S. airstrikes on three nuclear sites in Iran, reportedly carried out in support of Israel.
Qatar reminded the Iranian envoy that it has always pushed for diplomatic engagement with Tehran and has worked tirelessly to reduce tensions through dialogue.
Doha also said it had written to the United Nations Security Council and Secretary-General António Guterres, warning of the grave escalation and urging immediate intervention to prevent further deterioration in the Middle East.
It called on the UN Security Council to urgently impose a ceasefire across the region.
The al-Udeid base, which hosts about 10,000 U.S. personnel, had been evacuated before the attack.
Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait briefly closed their airspace following the strike, but all three later reopened it.
The three Gulf nations host U.S. military installations.
