Rainy Season: Need For Proper Enlightenment

Speaking frankly, the rainy season is here again and it is time to remind the people of the state of Osun of their responsibility towards themselves and their environment.

Whatever mistake we make to ourselves can be forgiven but that done to the environment can never be.

There is no doubt that on a weekly basis, the Heavens will open up and rains will come streaming down but events of the recent past have shown that our people don’t learn from the past and history is good at repeating itself.

I am using this medium to call on relevant authorities to commence proper education and enlightenment campaigns against the indiscriminate tampering of the environment especially during the wet season.

During this season, a great deal of water occasioned by rainfall would be seen by residents and the first thing on the minds of residents as observed over the years is the misuse of this.

Such acts of misuse include: residents using their drainages as quick channels of disposing refuse, residents dumping refuse along the banks of rivers, streams and lakes forgetting that these bodies of water are important sources of water for the growing population.

Also, residents indiscriminately defecate along the banks of these waters; some even go as far as doing laundry and urinating into these waters.

Unknown to them, most of these water later are sipped underground which later form the water table through which wells are dug, boreholes are drilled for daily consumption.

Based on these facts, there is need for the state ministries of Health and Environment to educate the citizens of the state to approach this period with a little bit of caution so that we would not end up polluting the very environment and water that we depend on to survive.

It is not enough to dredge the drainages after as a result of our bad habits. Water channels are blocked and this water end up paying our residences visit. There is also need to encourage the people to clear their drainages so as to prevent any refuse clogging the passage of water and proper refuse disposal habits.
