Ramadan: Don Condemns Closure Of Schools In Northern States

A lecturer at the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Fountain University, Osogbo, Dr. Badmus Abdulwaheed has condemned the five-week closure of schools for the Ramadan fast by some northern state governments, including Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, and Kebbi.

He made this assertion on Friday while speaking during the weekly X (formerly Twitter) Spaces organised by Osun Defender.

According to him, the practice of closing schools for the entire month of Ramadan is not only unnecessary but also detrimental to students’ academic progress.

He cited the example of Saudi Arabia, an Islamic country where schools continue academic activities during the fasting period.

“I lecture at a faith-based university, and the only adjustment made during Ramadan is rescheduling activities. Classes start at 9:00 am and close at 3:00 pm, with office activities also reduced. However, shutting down an entire school for Ramadan seems unnecessary,” he stated.

Dr. Badmus advised that instead of declaring a total holiday, academic institutions should consider reducing school days or shortening operating hours to accommodate fasting students and staff.

He argued that keeping students at home for a whole month leads to academic setbacks, stressing that Ramadan should not be used as a justification for halting educational activities.

The scholar further recommended that if schools insist on declaring holidays, they should streamline their academic calendar so that breaks coincide with Ramadan rather than disrupting the school year.
