Real Madrid hope to unveil Julen Lopetegui later on Thursday as new coach.
Lopetegui was announced as the replacement for Zinedine Zidane on Tuesday, with the idea being that he would take over after the World Cup. However, in a stunning move, the head of the Spanish FA sacked Lopetegui for the way he’d handled his signing at Real Madrid.
Real Madrid are keen to seize the opportunity and present Lopetegui on Thursday evening as their new coach. He will be signing a three-year deal at the Bernabéu.
The details of his presentation are still to be worked out, but some sources say it could take place around 18:30 CEST on Thursday, during the opening match of the World Cup between Russia and Saudi Arabia.
