There seems to be more to Ajuri Ngelale’s sudden exit as President Tinubu’s spokesperson than his cited personal and medical reasons, as whispers of impending termination swirl.
Osun Defender reported on Saturday that Ngelale announced his decision to take a leave of absence from work over medical and personal issues.
The Presidency in a statement later confirmed and accepted Ngelale’s decision to exit as Tinubu’s spokesperson.
However, Premium Times in a publication on Sunday, quoting sources in the presidency, reported that Ngelale’s exit was a result of his inability to deliver on the job.
According to the report, some members of Tinubu’s cabinet said that Mr Ngelale lacked the requisite “experience, contacts and networks” needed for the job.
“It is a misnomer and a miscalculation for the President to have appointed such a junior journalist to such a senior position. It is no surprise that he could not deliver as expected,” the source told Premium Times.

Similarly, the Foundation for Investigative Journalism Nigeria said Ngelale was fired by the Presidency contrary to his claim.

Ngelale was picked in August 2023 as Tinubu’s spokesperson.
