The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned what it described as “reckless governance” under Governor Seyi Makinde, following the illegal arrest and detention of human rights activist, Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman, alongside 11 artisans.

The APC accused the Makinde-led administration of high-handedness and deliberate victimization of citizens who protested against the forceful takeover of their workplace Axel Arigato Men's Bird Tape Sneakers in Cremino, women and kids • Hanbags and accessories – a mechanic workshop located on the Federal Government road setback opposite Gbagi Market in Ibadan.

The opposition party claimed that the government, through its agents led by Seye air jordan 4 military blue 2024 Famojuro, orchestrated the move to displace the artisans for the benefit of a select clique.

In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, and made available to journalists in Ibadan, the APC called for the immediate release of the detained individuals who are currently being held at Agodi Correctional Centre.

The party emphasized that the protest was a legitimate expression of frustration and should not be criminalized.

“The vicious circle of land grabbing in Oyo State has reached a dangerous dimension under Governor Makinde. From Iwo Road to Challenge, Apata, and now Agodi-Gate, thousands of citizens have been dislodged from their workshops, shops, and businesses without any meaningful alternatives provided,” the statement read.

The party also condemned the demolition of traders’ shops at Araromi Spare Parts Market, Agodi-Gate, last Thursday, a move it described as “a wicked assault on livelihoods.”

The APC questioned the sincerity of the state government, arguing that developmental projects should not come at the cost of ruining the lives of residents.

“Why mobilize bulldozers on a public holiday declared by the market authorities? Why not exhaust avenues for meaningful engagement with stakeholders before destroying shops and properties worth billions of naira?” Sadare queried.

The APC further accused the Makinde administration of implementing projects to enrich a few individuals under the guise of development, while neglecting the plight of ordinary citizens.

The party demanded adequate compensation for the affected traders and restoration of their businesses.

“Denying people access to their means of livelihood is not only callous but also despotic. The current plight of the 12 artisans highlights Governor Makinde’s true character. This is the same man who shed crocodile tears when a minor structure was demolished under the Ajimobi administration. Now, the people can see him for who he really is,” the statement added.

The opposition party also warned the governor against further displacement of residents, threatening that more citizens are ready to resist his administration’s alleged “land-grabbing policies” and poor execution of projects.

“Governor Makinde must prepare to face growing resistance if his administration continues on this path of impunity. The people of Oyo State deserve governance that prioritizes their welfare, not reckless policies that impoverish them,” the APC concluded.

The party called on well-meaning individuals within and outside the state to intervene and ensure the immediate release of the detained activist and artisans, while urging the government to rethink its approach to developmental projects to avoid further hardship for the people.
